Fourth of July on The Iron Range

No One Celebrates ‘The Fourth’ Like Iron Rangers

4thofjulyEverybody has his or her favorite holiday. Like many other Rangers, mine happens to be the Fourth of July. In fact,  MANY non-Rangers have been inducted into Range Fourth of July celebrations; these Independence day evangalists now refuse to celebrate anywhere else. Who would? Who else has a street dance like Eveleth or the Aurora Freedome Fete or the Gilbert Gala Parade ? Where else can you eat Becky’s eggrolls, Barb’s fried bread. barbeques, fireworks, the best parades and TONS of fun!

A time of reunions and friendship at their finest

There is no better time of year to reconnect with old friends, classmates and family. EVERYONE comes home for the Fourth of July on the Range. Seriously, I would give up a party any other day of the year but never the Fourth. Disclaimer: I’ve only had two not-so-fun Fouths and that’s because I was big and pregnant. Oh, and one time I broke my foot by foolishly jumping into a friends arms; you guessed it—he didn’t catch me. Sitting for hours in the ER, I missed the street dance and was immobile for the rest of the summer.  Otherwise, I have never been disappointed.

It’s the pre-celebration that rocks!

Interestingly, Most of the fun doesn’t necessarily take place on “July 4th.” Rangers actually like to extend the entire holiday by starting the party several days ahead—this coming weekend will start it all! In Eveleth, Goodfella’s Bar and The Grille has Sweet Freedom playing Friday and Saturday night from 9:30 pm until 1:30 am. Saturday is Gilbert’s annual street dance featuring the Prodigal Sons Band playing outside Devo’s Sand Bar, the Pat Ram Pub and Jim’s Seldom Inn. This street dance always sets the mood for more fun times ahead! July 2nd through the 4th, the city of Aurora will be whooping it up with the Freedom Fete Music and Pig Roast. Bring the whole family for great roast pork sandwiches and live music.

Now, July 3rd happens to be (in my opinion of course) the MOST FUN NIGHT OF THE YEAR!  Here’s the scoop: most people start the day with a huge barbecue. Then, people either make their way downtown Gilbert for the BIG NIGHT PARADE; this is the Range’s biggest Fourth of July parade and people come from ALL OVER to line the streets and catch souvenirs, candy and of course a BUZZ (no pun intended). The entire town is packed full. If a huge crowd isn’t your deal, Aurora will have a parade at 6pm, which may be smaller, but still a good time. After the parades, some folks hang around to view the fireworks, but most head down the highway to Eveleth for “Thunder over Eveleth” and the famous 3rd of July Street Dance. Most people usually don’t dance here, but rather they listen to good music and meet up with old friends to share laughs, catch up and party down.

Wake up with your party hat still attached

eveleth_clown_bandOnly on the Iron Range will you find hard-core Fourth of July fans that wake up early on the 4th, get a famous Bloody Mary’s at Eggy’s Red Garter or a Lime Cooler from the Roosevelt and watch yet another parade go by. Here’s a little secret: most parade goers look forward dancing with Eveleth’s famous Clown Band; you’ll never see any better clown attire than here, folks. But if you’re up at the lake, like many are, one of the best-attended parades is Tower’s 4th of July Parade. This parade rocks! Parade participants really go all out attempting to win one of the cash prizes which are awarded for best club, best commercial, best family and Best in Show wins 450 bucks! Tell me that’s not incentive to go a little nuts. These are not the only parades, of course. Check Rangebuzz.com EVENTS for complete information about parades in Ely, 110th Anniversary Calithumpian Parade in Biwabik.

There’s no better place to celebrate our country’s birthday than THE RANGE! Relax, let loose and have an awesome holiday.

Dining Deals and Steals During a Bad Economy

piggy-bankBy now, you’ve been told not to watch the news or participate in the woes of the tanked economy, and rightfully so. As Americans, it’s tough to make adjustments on a tight budget and who wants to stop enjoying going out to eat? Not me and I’m sure not you either! There are plenty of deals happening to feed your whole family for less than it would take to make a meal at home.

During the week (the time where I know I’d like a break from dinner duty), many establishments across the Iron Range have created food steals. I’m talking less than a few bucks to get a burger and fries, or less than 2 bucks for a half dozen wings—you get the point. Keep in mind, cheap does not infer low quality. And please, if I’ve missed something or you know of any other great food deals, please share!

Burger Nights

Feed a family of four for ten bucks with no clean up or preparation? Yup. Here are the following places who offer burger and fries for a few bucks. I believe all of these specials are dine-in only.

Wing Nights

Chow down on crispy chicken wings for $0.50 or less:

  1. Goodfella’s offers a variety of flavors for a $0.25 each on Thursdays all day. Again, get there early because the place is packed after 5pm.
  2. Wing Wednesday at the Brick Yard: A quarter each as well as specials on beer and rails from 4-8pm.

Top Places to Chill along the Iron Range Snowmobile Trails

snowmobileSnowmobiling is HARD WORK! When your stomach starts a growlin’, check out these places to stop for a bite to eat along the Iron Range snowmobile trails. Know for their hospitality, Rangers serve up great grub with a free side of “Minnesota Nice”.

Britt, MN

Wooden Table Inn (north of Virginia)
This rustic tavern and restaurant is well known for roasting an excellent Prime Rib; Try the Wooden Table Burger smothered in Pepper jack cheese and Jalapeno Bacon; it’s sure to add a little zip to your day. The Wooden Table makes a perfect stop while cruising the snowmobile trail along Highway 25 between Buhl and Britt. Leaving from Wooden Table Inn? Perfect: make your next stop at Billy’s in Buhl.

The Elroy (north of Virginia)
The Elroy has long been an Iron Range dining “hot spot.” It was closed for a short period of time, but has reopened with a great new menu and fantastic chef. The best part is that it’s right on the trail!

Virginia and Mountain Iron, MN

Sawmill Saloon & Restaurant (Virginia)
The Sawmill Saloon, located on Hwy 53 in Virginia (and nearby the snowmobile trails) is a long time tradition for both “Iron Rangers” and guests. The Sawmill is the place to hang out & socialize, but don’t forget the great food and variety of beverages!

Adventures Restaurant & Pub (Virginia)
Adventures mixes great American classics with a touch of the wild. Try their Sizzling Fajitas, Walleye Sandwich or even their Indian Creek Elk Sandwich….they’re all unique and will satisfy your taste buds! And, don’t forget their 2-for-1 Happy Hour (M-F). Easily accessible off the trail between Eveleth and Virginia.

BG’s (Mountain Iron, MN)
BG’s is known for grilling one of best burgers in town and offers a variety of tasty chicken wings. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming! BG’s is a little tricky to get to from the trails—located just off Highway 169 on HWY 137—but if you’re riding in the Mountain Iron or Virginia area, it’s worth seeking out.

Eveleth, Gilbert and Biwabik, MN

Timber’s Edge (Noth of Eveleth, Hwy. 53)
If you’re sledding north of Highway 53, make a stop into Timber’s Edge, located near Makinen. Here you’ll find great food with an inviting, casual atmosphere. Now under new ownership, you’ll likely run into some exceptional live music on the weekends. They offer daily food specials, happy hour and are also known for an excellent Friday Fish Fry.

Goodfella’s – The Bar & Grille (Eveleth, MN)
Goodfella’s is one of Eveleth MN hot spots. With a welcoming atmosphere, cozy dining room, weekend entertainment and excellent food, it’s a great place to stop! When on the trail along Highway 53 heading north, just cross the highway by the Super 8 motel and Goodfella’s is right there; you can’t miss it.

Wandering Pines (Gilbert)
Visit Wandering Pines, and try one of their ethnic selections like South Americans and Porketta–food you’ll most likely only find on the Iron Range. They also offer a variety of wraps, sandwiches and specialty pizzas, plus a breakfast buffet on the weekends. Located at the end of Broadway Avenue, you can’t miss Wandering Pines when riding the trail from Virginia to Gilbert or Eveleth to Gilbert. This little bar & restaurant makes a perfect stop when on the way to Biwabik.

Whistling Bird (Gilbert, MN)

Know as one of the Iron Range’s most unique restaurants specializing in Jamaican cuisine, Whistling Bird offers a tropical atmosphere, delicious food and a variety of frozen drinks. I recommend the Black & Bleu Steak or the Rasta Pasta. YUM!

Timbers Restaurant (The Lodge at Giants Ridge – Biwabik)
Giants Ridge offers one more option for trail riding treats - Timbers. From subs and steak to pizza, Italian and burgers, Timbers restaurant in The Lodge has an expanded menu full of options. Hint: try the fresh walleye!

Hibbing/Buhl

Billy’s Bar & Grill (Buhl)
Billy’s Bar is located in Buhl, MN right on the trail off of Highway 25 heading west from the Virginia/Mountain Iron area. In fact, it’s a great 45-minute ride from the Wooden Table in Britt straight to Billy’s Bar & Grill. They offer tasty café selections like burgers and sandwiches and they often have live music or karaoke weekly. Stop in during Tuesday’s Meat Raffle and win yourself a slab of beef–sure to stay frozen on the back of your sled.

Thirsty Moose (Hibbing, MN)
Ok, so this one is off the trail a bit, but not too difficult to ditch ride along HWY 37.  The Thirsty Moose is a small (but well known) bar and restaurant located off Hwy 37 just east of Hibbing. They make pizzas of practically any concoction and their burgers are worth writing home about! The Thirsty Moose provides a fun atmosphere with great food.

The Iron Range offers even more fine dining opportunities, homespun “mom and pop” cafes and unique ethnic restaurants…so, no matter where you choose to stop along the trail, the ‘up-north’ hospitality this region is known for is guaranteed to warm your heart and keep you coming back for more!

Be sure to check Dave Karpik’s snowmobile blog for northern Minnesota snowmobile trail conditions, tips and giveaways.

10 Best EVER Ways to Survive Winter on the Iron Range

It’s now January-with about 3+ months of winter ahead-and many Rangers are tired of shoveling and complaining about the cold. If it’s not snowing an inch per hour, it’s a bitter 40 below (without the wind chill!) We’re all lacking a healthy dose of Vitamin D and feeling a little blue.  Depression has set in, and getting up in the morning to face another dreary day takes all we have to just get out of bed.

Well, snap out of it!

Bundle up, put on your snow pants and get out and enjoy the above average snowfall! Trust me, I can lack motivation to brave the elements, I admit it; however, once you get out and get moving you will feel much better. In case you’ve forgotten, let me suggest some great ways to perk up your winter.

#1 Go Sliding!

slidingSliding is not just for kids. Flying down an icy hill is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face! Grab a sled and head to the nearest hill. Try out these great sliding spots:

  • Eveleth Sliding Hill-located just behind the ROCC (Eveleth Curling Club) and across from Thunderbird Mine, the hill is massive! It may be difficult for little tikes but the ride is worth the climb!
  • Virginia Golf Course-I would classify this location as the ‘perfect size’ sliding hill. A great ride and not too steep of a jaunt back up. I must warn you: I took the family sliding here last week and launched off a bump near the bottom, so steer clear or your tailbone may suffer a bit.
  • Eveleth Golf Course-this place brings me back to when I was a kid when my father got frustrated because I couldn’t walk up the hill. The ride is FANTASTIC ; you’re sure to get a thrill flying down this hill
  • VIC Power Park-Located off DuPont Road in Hibbing. I haven’t actually been there myself, but I’ve heard it’s a great place to slide. If there’s a hill and snow, how could it be bad?
  • Carey Lake-just travel a few miles past Vic Power Park to arrive at Carey Lake which is one of Hibbing’s winter activity hot spots.
  • Giants Ridge-Uh, ski resort? Of course they have a rockin’ sliding hill!

#2  Play Hockey At Your Local Rink

When I was growing up, my parents enrolled me in figure skating where I learned some pretty fancy moves. However, down at Northside Rink in Eveleth, two-foot spins and bunny hops just didn’t fly; if you didn’t have a stick you might as well have gone home. I learned to play hockey-toe picks and all-from the boys down at the rink, and I to this day can still raise the puck.  I think that living in Northern Minnesota, learning to play hockey should be a graduation requirement (hmm…now that I’m on the school board I’ll see what I can do about that…); skating is fun, great exercise, and kids love to play with their parents. I can just about promise that if you put on some skates and take the kids to the rink, they’ll be totally pumped.  I don’t know where all the outdoor rinks are on the Range, so I’ll list the ones I do know of. Please feel free to add additional Iron Range skating rinks by leaving a comment.

Don’t tell me you don’t own a pair of skates, either. Ah, heck you don’t need skates to have a great game of boot hockey. In fact, Eggy’s Red Garter lounge has flooded their sand volleyball court and the local crew loves to have a few brews and kick around the puck. They also have broom ball and their 2nd Annual Goalie Game Tournament coming up on January 10. If you don’t play, come and watch! It’s crazy how fast the guys can smack that puck…I prefer to stay on the sidelines.

#3  Tour the Woods

Whether on snowshoes or cross country skis, few things are as beautiful as Northern Minnesota snow-covered forests-not to mention great exercise! The Iron Range possesses some of the most beautiful and well kept cross-country ski trails in northern Minnesota.  If you don’t own your own skis, you can rent skis at Giants Ridge.

#4 Go Ice Fishing With Your Friends

When I was little, my dad took me ice fishing a few times-we never got a fish. NOT EVER.  I couldn’t understand why anyone would spend all day on a lake in a tent staring at a hole-how boring.  Now I’ve matured and I’ve grown to know why ice fishing continues in popularity: Beer + Extra Large Fish House with furniture=Party time. Ah Ha!  Now it all makes sense.

#5 Ride the Range

Jump on a sled and hit the Iron Range snowmobile trails! Snowmobiling is so fun and one can travel the entire Range on our snowmobile trail system. If you’re a snowmobile lover, check out Dave’s Ride the Range blog for the latest news on snowmobile conditions on the Iron Range.

#6 White Wash Someone You Love

You think I’m joking, don’t you? I’m not. PLAY PEOPLE! Make snow angels, walk the town during a huge snow storm, push someone in a snow bank, attack your neighbor with snowballs (IF you know them and they’re not 80 like my neighbors are. On second thought…) I get these ridiculous email forwards all the time telling me to “dance’ and ‘laugh’ and ‘blah blah puke.’ But listen here:  the only fluff goin’ on here is the white stuff on the ground. If you took just a few minutes out of the day once in a while to do something spontaneous and a little crazy, just think how invigorating it could be.

#7 Play Games

When the bitter cold is just too much to handle, playing games can be a great way to beat the winter blues. Dig out those old board games-Scrabble, Cribbage, Monopoly, Pictionary-and get the whole family involved.

By the end of January, staying indoors cooped up with the entire family day in and day out bring ‘cabin fever’ to a dangerous temperature. If it’s too cold to play outside, reminisce about summer by playing a few games of bocce ball-inside! Both Jim’s Sports Club and the Moose Saloon & Eatery in Chisholm have indoor bocce ball courts. They also have leagues a few nights a week so you may want to check their schedules.

#8 Attend Winter Festivals

From Laskiainen to Ely’s Winter Festival the Iron Range communities embrace winter by celebrating! Awesome siding Hills, ethnic food, crafts and a multitude of winter activities create a warm atmosphere despite what the thermometer says. OF course, you can always check our Events page for festivals on the Iron Range.

#9 Snuggle

Blankets, a cozy fire, flannel PJs and someone to snuggle with:  Don’t get much better than this, folks.  The bills can pile up, the snow can pour from the sky and the world can freeze over and as long as my little boys still love to nestle up to their mom and dad, nothing else matters.

#10 Sauna Often

Aaahhhh….the burst of moist heat that radiates from the rocks can warm you right down to your bones. Then, when you walk outside in sub-zero temperatures it actually feels good! If you don’t have the luxury of a sauna in your own home, the Mesabi Family YMCA and other health clubs across the range that have saunas. Otherwise, I suggest you make a few more Finnish friends :)

Fall on the Iron Range Arrives; Let’s go cruising!

Autumn represents the favorite time of year for many Rangers— football games, crisp air, beautiful colors, the first day of school (my personal favorite). There’s not a better time to drive down country roads and take in all the scenery surrounding us in Northern Minnesota than in September and October. Since I’ve lived on the Iron Range my entire life, I’ve discovered a variety of cruising roads with some great stops along the way. I’ll be sharing these special road trips with you, adding a new one to the list each week through mid October. Enjoy!

Dallas Stars Matt Niskanen Visits Home on the Range

Kat and Matt NiskanenWhen my sister and I were out for a few cocktails Friday night at the Sawmill Saloon, we noticed a small crowd gathered around a young man. A patron soon says, “Yeah…that’s Matt Niskanen. Go ahead and ask him for his autograph, he’s really nice and he doesn’t mind.” So…I did. And to no surprise, Niskanen smiled and said, “Sure. No problem.” He autographed a napkin for me and the Hometown Focus Issue, with Matt Niskanen on the cover; as this year’s celebrity, he signed autographs at the 2008 Sand Lake Shuffle. Later, I pestered him again, “Sorry, not to bother you, but would you mind taking a quick picture with me?” Again, he warmly smiled and said, “Sure. No problem.”Even though I don’t know Matt Niskanen, it always makes me feel proud when someone from the Iron Range—Mountain Iron MN, to be accurate—makes it to the big leagues. As a kid, just about every hockey player hopes to become a pro-hockey player. Matt Niskanen made his dream a reality. After playing for the UMD Bulldogs, he was recruited first by Iowa AHL and then by the Dallas Stars.

What’s even cooler than being a pro hockey player is SERIOUSLY how awesome he performed in his first year with the Stars. Last winter while bartending, I remember watching several NHL hockey games; even as hard core Minnesota Wild fans, the crowd cheered for Niskanen when he made a great play or scored a goal. And Stars games were on quite often just to watch Niskanen play. Local hockey fans were proud to have a fellow Iron Ranger playing professional hockey—even if he wasn’t playing in Minnesota.

Matt Niskanen really is a genuine, down-to-earth guy who cares about helping fellow Rangers and connecting with his hometown friends. Coming home to attend the Sand Lake Shuffle and supporting local cancer survivors made many Shuffle participants super happy this year. I casually observed him that evening at the Sawmill and I could see how excited his friends were to hang out with their buddy Matt and to relax and talk about old times. I’m certainly grateful I had the opportunity to meet Matt Niskanen and I wish him the best of luck next season.

I Heart Bob Dylan and Ironworld

In spite of all the recent hullabaloo over Ironworld, I’m going to tell you about the great time I had at the Bob Dylan exhibit—“Tangled Up in Ore.” And I wasn’t the only one there, either. FYI—there were many—yes, many—people checking out the exhibit when I was there.

When city folk ask me where I’m from and I say, “Have you heard of the Iron Range?”  They say, “Nope.”

“Have you heard of Hibbing?” I ask.

“Um…I think so…” they reply, still with a look of confusion. (They are trying to be nice.)

“Have you heard of Bob Dylan? He’s from Hibbing.” Bam! The light goes off and finally, we connect.

Just about everyone has heard of Bob Dylan. As a child, I remember the first Dylan song I ever heard was “Rainy Day Woman #12 & 35” and always thought, “What does this title have to do with getting stoned?” As I grew older, I learned to appreciate his writing and lyrics and began to understand his humor. I find him eccentric, mysterious and one of those people who you know is very strange, but really, he’s some kind of genius. I generally prefer Dylan done by other artists. I’ve always been engaged with his poetic lyrics but that voice…well…I’ll be honest; I have a low tolerance. One of my favorite songs EVER is Tangled Up in Blue—performed by the Indigo Girls. They take the story and give it some attitude, some sass and turn the words into a dynamic and energetic, lively piece of music. My best friend would disagree, as her heart belongs to Bob. After visiting “Tangled Up in Ore,” I not only gained insight and appreciation for Bobby D., but his writings and memories of the Iron Range inspired me. Once again, I felt proud to be a “Ranger.” Continue reading ‘I Heart Bob Dylan and Ironworld’

Land of the Loon: An Iron Range Tradition

One of my favorite summer events to hit Virginia, Minnesota, is the famous Land of the Loon Festival. Like many Rangers, I see the Land of the Loon as the official beginning of fun and celebration of summer. The festival kicks off Saturday morning with an extravagant parade that travels down 5th Avenue and Chestnut Street. Then the “Loonies” race to Olcott Park to indulge in a HUGE spread of ethnic foods—Gyros, Italian Sausages and Becky’s Egg Rolls—and to taste the most delicious desserts: sno-cones, cotton candy, funnel cakes and the famous mini-donuts (my son refuses to quit asking, “Can we get mini-donuts? Can we? Can we, Mom?”). The children, with their sticky faces and fingers, gather with their parents near the gazebo to dance and sing with the various entertainers. Talented artists and crafters share the park to sell their unique and beautiful creations year after year. After a day at the park, the nightlife fires up downtown at the Land of the Loon Street dance; the roads are blocked and people party hearty while they dance in the streets and enjoy more food, drink and entertainment. With smiles and full bellies, Rangers can’t get enough. Most return on Sunday just to do it all over again. Rain or shine, everyone shows up.

Rangebuzz.com fans, let give you a little inside information about what’s going down at this year’s Land of the Loon Festival. I’ll start with the food (since it’s my FAVORITE part). There’s absolutely no way I can walk by the Gyro stand and not get one. Last year, after standing in line for 20 minutes (it was worth it) my husband says, “Can I have a bite.” Ah…NO! “Get your own!” was my response. I’m normally a sharing person, I am! But I just love every single bite. That’s not the only tasty treat at the Land of the Loon. I’m talking about the best Italian Sausages ever served up by the Italian American Club (these are my father’s favorites). The Virginia Lion’s Club always serves sarmas, turkey legs and Ukrainian sausage. There’s Pepe’s Mexican food, there are cheese curds, blooming onions, pita sandwiches, corn on the cob, BBQ ribs—the list goes on and on.

Later that evening, I always hit the LOTL Street Dance. There is one stop that’s automatic: I gotta get me some of Barb’s Fried Bread and a Becky’s Egg Roll or I’m not happy. And hundreds of other people share this vow, I’m sure. (I’ve been dieting all week just to gear up for this weekend!) But even better than stuffing my face, I look forward to hearing a couple of our Cool Range Bands. FOUR HORSE JOHNSON will be playing in front of the Sports Page Bar and HORSE JOHNSON will be playing in front of the Sports Page Bar and MELLOWDRAMA will be jamming right in front of Poppers Bar. (Friday night, Mellowdrama will play inside Poppers Bar.) Downtown will certainly really rocking with good tunes, great people, food and drinks.
